All our programmes are designed with the locals in mind first and foremost, and then volunteers and interns come to fit into the local setup, which ensures that the programmes will continue beyond the stay of external partners and volunteers. The programmes and experiences are also designed to ensure our core value of knowledge exchange takes place seamlessly.

So obviously you can’t just up and say,‘I’m flying across the world tomorrow’ without doing any research, booking flights, accommodation and itineraries for the trip. Maybe the Kardashians can do it because they have the money and a show to shoot but for the rest of us carefully planning and saving are necessary.  Now how far in advance you start to plan is usually determined by the type of trip you want to go on and also the length of it. The general recommended length is anything between 6 and 24 months.

What are you traveling for

Students travelling for summer internships

It’s usually best if this is on your mind from the time you start college. If your college has a programme where they send students abroad forsummer internships or volunteer missions abroad, you will benefit from finding out about it as soon as you start. 18 to 24 months is a good enough length of time for you to start saving up.

Family vacations

Family vacations involve more than just one person so planning them means finding a time when everybody has a break from work, school or other commitments. This is a trip that you need to plan for more than a year. If you give yourself enough time you will get enough time to find experiences that suit everyone and have time to book it and even take advantage of early bird promotions that they usually have in most tourist attractions/destinations.

Professional or Business Travel/Trips

In most cases when people travel for work their companies often fund their trips and there is no problemwith working leave days and such. You still need to do as much research as you can to find out about the country you are going to and see what  outside work you might want to take part it. You may only have a few hours, so sightseeing or day trips are more feasible for you than overnight excursions.

Volunteering missions abroad

A lot of people find fulfillment in going away and combine seeing the world with getting involved in livelihood improvement projects in different parts of the world. If your host offers accommodation and you don’t really intend on doing a lot of fun activities then 12 months is enough to save up for plane tickets and plan time off work. If you do have to sort out your own accommodation and intend to tour the place a bit, then 18 to 24 months is decent for you to plan.

Things to consider when planning a trip abroad

As you consider how much time you need to plan a trip abroad, there are things that are on your to-do list that ultimately will tell you how much planning you must do and how long it will take. Here are some of the things that you should prioritise:

  • Safety first: You don’t want your plane to land in the middle of a war zone, unless you are a soldier going there to join in the fight. Find out about tourist safety and see if there are companies or agencies that can host you and ensure your safety during your stay. Other safety issues to research include issues such as diseases and other issues that might not agree with you, for instance, the need for malaria vaccination or the weather at the time of year you intend to travel. We will be publishing a safety blog in two weeks for travellers to Africa.
  • The cost: Once you have established that your intended destination is safe you need to find out how much it would cost you to go there. This will guide you in deciding how long you can stay there and how many activities you can do there. If the country is very expensive to stay and if the activities you intend on being a part of are expensive, then your trip cannot be long. Finding an agency to work with will help you get better rates for what you want to do.
  • Travel health insurance: This is perhaps one of the most important things you need to consider when planning away from home. You don’t want to be stuck in a place where you can’t be treated if you fall ill and you are away from your family to immediately get help. Find out if your current insurance will cover you abroad and if the country you want to travel to will accept it and what exactly they cover. You may find to your horror that the insurance you were relying on will just get you through the doctor’s door in the destination country but will not cover any emergency procedures that might come up.
  • Purpose: Taking time out to travel to a different country/continent is a big decision, one that you should reap real benefits from. Even if you are travelling just to have fun or rest and nothing “serious”, you still need to plan otherwise you run the risk of not actually getting any rest or any fun. Different countries have different things to offer and even in one country there are best places and ways to achieve the purpose of your visit. Find out about all this before you make any bookings and ask as many questions as you can think of from your information provider so that you don’t regret your time, energy and money if you then don’t find satisfaction.

Once all that has been thought out and established you will have a clear picture of how long you will need to plan and save. My advice to you though is that just start the vacation fund now. You are going to need money anyway.
